Gym class has always been a personal favorite of mine. When I went to middle school, I always looked forward to gym class, or recess. I always liked to get active, and with the snow piling up outside, gym class seems to be my only time for recreation. However, in my four years of high school, I’ve come across a matter which always seems to confuse, and irritate me.

Everyone makes mistakes. People forget things. I’ve travelled to school, forgetting my gym clothes, sometimes my homework. Being unprepared for gym every once in a while is understandable. We can all forget to bring our clothes with us. But what about the kids to are frequently unprepared?

In my four years of high school, I’ve found that with every gym class, comes the few people who are unprepared every single gym class. It confuses me. Gym is your exercise period. It’s the one time of your school day in which you are granted the ability to play within your 6 hour time period in school. Why are students ungrateful with the gift they have been given?

I find it disappointing to see a kid sitting down every day, not getting the exercise they might need. Gym is a part of your education. Granted it’s your play time, you’re getting graded on it, just like how you’re getting graded in Math or Social Studies. It’s irritating, knowing that there are a handful of students in our school who don’t take gym class seriously. Constantly being unprepared in gym will delay your journey to your graduation.

Gym is not only about a grade. It’s about your health. Like I said before, gym is your free time class. Your 45 minutes of exercise. By sitting on the bleachers constantly, you’re not getting the exercise required per day. This will cause problems for you in the future.

Just 10 seconds into the video is already too much for most to bear. It finally made its way to the news after the shocking video was released on You Tube and Facebook for millions to view.

It seems that children in the southern town of Rahat have taken a new hobby that involves burning dogs alive. The event was video tapped and contained graphic images of a small dog being burned alive after the children poured gasoline on it and light him up to watch it burn.

“I heard students talking about it but I haven’t watched it. The idea of it is disgusting and sad,” said Mr. Shin. Most people can agree that it is disturbing and terrible and it seems unlikely to come across someone who disagrees.

“I also heard about it and it’s horrible that someone can to such a thing to a dog. It makes me cry just thinking about it and it makes me think about my own dog,” says school aid Mrs. Marell.
It seems that new travels fast when it comes to videos of animal abuse on face book. Most students have made this topic the issue of the week and it is talked about in inside classrooms to outside.

“I couldn’t watch it, I felt like crying just thinking about my dog,” said Senior Judy Mae.

The video that was released has stirred up ugly phenomenon. “The existing punishments for animal cruelty aren’t strict enough,” says Ms. Byheny.
We can make a difference; if you see something say something.
Animals have souls too so don’t wait for a video to remind you that.

Throughout generations and generations, music has played a significant role in human society. Music still lives on today, bringing joy and setting a common ground for people from every corner of this planet.

Although music is a worldwide phenomenon, the American music market is the most dominating one. This makes sense seeing how America is the center of music culture and the English language is used all around the world.

American music might be dominant but there are many other music cultures that have been making its way up the ladder. One noticeable one would be K-Pop, or Korean Pop. K-Pop a musical genre consisting of Pop, dance, electro-pop, hip hop, rock, R&B and electronic music originating in South Korea.

“I’m a K-Pop fan even though I’m not Korean,” said Jeff Chan, a senior. “I like B2ST, Big Bang, 2NE1, 2PM and many more. I like it because the music is fun to listen to and it has good beats.”
K-Pop has been gradually been appearing everywhere and its popularity has been gaining momentum over the years. K-Pop music now plays in clubs and even on T.V. Today, K-Pop rules in South Korea as well as many countries in South and South East Asia.

K-Pop artists have topped charts in foreign countries and many of them have received great recognition in Japan, Thailand, The Philippines’, Singapore, and etc. Even in places in Europe, South America and also the United States.

“At a 2NE1 concert there was a very diverse number of races,” said Jenny Lee, a senior. “The actual percentages of Koreans were 10%. They all knew the lyrics too!”

Recently, K-Pop artists such as Big Bang, a group of five males, and 2NE1, a group of four girls (Pronounced 21), were awarded international recognition. Big Bang won the best international act, beating Britney Spears, and 2NE1 won best new band in the world, topping artists from all over the world including the United States, Great Britain, Mexico, Venezuela, India, New Zealand and many more.

K-Pop artists have also been taking its baby steps into the American music industry. Artists such as Seven, Rain, BoA, Wonder Girls, etc. have collaborated with American Artists such as, Kanye West, The Jonas Brothers, Will.I.Am, Ludacris, Flo-rida, Lil’ Kim, Diplo, Teddy Riley, and Rodney Jerkins who are all widely known.

“I like the Black Eyed Peas and their music so that is how I found out about 2NE1,” said Karen Barrera, a senior. “I found out that Will.I.Am produced music for 2NE1 to make their American debut. Also I actually really like their previous music.”

K-Pop is definitely taking the world by storm and maybe several years from now, a lot more people will know of it. Currently there are already non-koreans in the Korean music market, including people from China, Thailand and the U.S.

“K-Pop has a really fun vibe to its music and I enjoy listening to it,” said Katie Shafky, a senior. “You never know, it just might become the next big thing.”

Have you ever gotten into a street fight? Now imagine that but six other guys against you.

A viral video of an Asian teenager getting jumped and mugged behind a school has stirred controversy throughout the United States.

A 17 year old Asian who attended Chicago High School was beaten a mugged by 7 teenagers while being videotaped. The defenseless Asian would not disclose his name to the media.

According to several news articles, the boy was lured to an alleyway by a girl and then was jumped and mugged. The mugging was not about race.

The jumping took place in Chicago, Illinois.

“It’s extremely disgusting what they did to that boy. He was helpless and had no intention to fight back. They didn’t need 7 people to jump him,” said senior, Natasha Alies.

The attackers were identified as a seventeen year old, three sixteen year olds, three fifteen year olds, and a fifteen year old girl who videotaped it. Later they posted the video up onto YouTube.

According to the police, the parents of several of the kids had recognized them from the video and turned their kids in. All seven kids are sentenced to juvenile prison.

The victim had been robbed of his wallet, gym clothes, and shoes. The victim had managed to escape barefoot in the snow.

“Violence isn’t the answer, it only leads to more violence.” said Junior, Winnie Cheng. Winnie is petrified and confused by this video.

The victim was sent to a local hospital where the doctors said he only had minor cuts and bruises.

As for the people in RFK, let’s try to prevent something like this to ever happen in our school.

LIFE AFTER COLLEGE By Carlos Gomez

An average student takes four years to finish high school and this school year is almost halfway over. For seniors, college is right around the corner; some cannot wait to leave and others don’t want to leave yet. There is a strong feeling of nostalgia in RFK.

Teachers in high school try their best to prepare you for college throughout your high school career. But you cannot force somebody to learn when they don’t want to. Students are required to have some sort of thirst for knowledge in order to learn. When a student slacks off by procrastinating and not doing work, it’s only hurting them now and later on in the future.

A former student of RFK who graduated two years ago was Mariam Chardiwalli; she is now attending Hunter College.

“There comes a point where you write so many papers that you lose your enthusiasm for writing,” said Chardiwalli.

Mariam also says “The experience is very rewarding though; you get to know yourself better and learn to make better life decisions.”

Although being in college is time consuming, there is much more to college life than just work. You’ll be able to have unforgettable experiences and meet plenty of interesting people.

Veronica Giraldo is one of those few seniors who is excited to leave RFK but doesn’t quite know what type of career she wants.

“I’m ready to explore and find out what life has to offer,” said Giraldo.

Knowing your options and choosing them wisely is better than randomly deciding what to do.

It’s summer time in RFK hallways! With the raise in the heat outside, the crowded hallways are heating up quick.

The hallways of RFK are known for being crowded during passing which already makes it hard to get to class every day. Now the crowded hallways meet the summer heat which makes getting to class a struggle.

The hallways are full of humidity along with a sea of students brushing past each other with the destination of a classroom or a locker or just a destination of a group of friends that they see.

“Walking through the hallways is the worst part of the day. As soon as you step out of a classroom with air conditioning, the humidity hits and you start to feel hot and sticky. It’s even worst considering how many people are in the hallway at the time,” said Annie Huang, senior.

As the year slowly comes to an end, the hallways should not be as crowded. Instead they should gradually become more and more empty. With the seniors getting ready to leave the building until the last day when they need to come back, the hallways should be less congested with people.

Soon the crowded hallways will be empty hallways full of heat and no students, until then, get your fan and a bottle of water because these last few days will be an oven in RFK.

As the year comes to an end, yearbooks are coming in. Everyone will be excited to sign and view their yearbooks and write their parting words to all of their friends. Before you go crazy thinking of what to write to your friends, try and do some premeditated planning of the things you would like to say before the year is over.

"I'm going to begin to think of what to tell my friends before the final day of school so that I make sure they know how I feel about them," said Moshe Ismailov, senior.

Start to make a list of the people who have truly made an imprint in your life during your time with them in high school. You can write down a few things about each person so you know what to begin your year book message to them with. You could even bring in the list and copy the message you have already wrote for them. This can save you time, allowing you to write in every one's year book.

"I think the idea of listing my friends is a good idea, I will start to brain storm about what to tell them," said Jackie Fundus, senior.

So seniors, if you are feeling overwhelmed by not begin able to tell everyone the things you would like to before you go, start to plan ahead. Planning ahead is a productive action to take it life. It allows you to do tasks to the best of your ability. Begin to plan the things you have to tell your friends before the school year ends and graduation will be a breeze.

It’s finally here. The NBA regular season is officially over and the playoffs for the NBA are set to tip of Sunday, April 17 2011.

Amongst the teams playing the playoffs this year are the New York Knicks.
This will be there first appearance in 9 years in the NBA playoffs.

It’s been so long since the Knicks had been in the playoffs. All the hype that was expected from the Knicks finally paid off.

The Knicks had some key moments in the redeem season. It all started in the summer when the Knicks acquired superstar Amire Stoudimire from the Phoenix Suns.

They had a big stretch at the beginning of the season with Amire playing phenomenally for the Knicks.

Towards the middle, the Knicks started losing a lot of games, but then they acquired one of the best basketball scoring players that the world has to offer, Carmelo Anthony. The Knicks also acquired Mr. Big shot himself, Chauncey Billups.

These 2 basketball player have taken a lot of criticism about some of the big losses, but they managed to bring the Knicks to first place since the Twin towers were standing.

Everyone in NYC is anticipating that the Knicks are going to beat the number three seed, Boston Celtics. The three Knicks superstars are going to all have to play at their best to have a chance at beating the best defense team in the first round, so let’s go Knicks!

It’s finally here and RFK is ready for the week long spring break. When we go to school we are so preoccupied about school work and getting the best grades.

“Being so over worked and exhausted will finally cease during spring break," said Marquise Greer, senior.

It is a shock to everyone that the end of the school year is around the corner and for the seniors it’s almost graduation and prom. Yet we can’t wait to spend this free week with our friends and family.

“Over this spring break I am going to go to the DMV to finally get my permit. Other than that I am not going anywhere on vacation but it is okay because I am going to the Dominican Republic over the summer”, said Marianna Dilluvio, senior.

This will be a little taste of the summer we all are excited for. We are all hoping the weather is nice next week.

We also have time to do the things and hobbies we love. Now we have the time to play video games or play our favorite sports.

“I’m excited for the upcoming break because I can finally relax and enjoy this nice weather”, said Jackie Fundus, senior.

It is sometimes easy to let the break go by without achieving the fun things you planned. Make sure you don’t let those free days go to waste.

“I’m excited for the summer because I’m graduating and I’m excited to graduate and I can’t wait to be tan”, said Alicia Russo, senior.

As much as we all hate school work and taking exams, we will all be glad to be back in after spring break because it is just closer to the end of the school year and the summer that will be waiting for us.

As the cold and rainy days come to an end, warm weather is an excitement that all of RFK is looking forward to enjoy.

Students are ready to throw on their t-shirts and shorts in the upcoming sunny days. RFK has plans for the next couple months.

“I am really looking forward to family trips, vacations, working and relaxing in the nice weather. I really want to go fishing with my dad when the weather gets nicer. I also cannot wait to get outside to play soccer and hand ball. I am pretty excited,” said Joshua Collazos, senior.

Many students are looking forward to working and saving up money for the summer time.

“I really want to work a lot in the next months. It would be great to make some extra money. I can’t wait to go to the beach with all my friends and go to parties. I am also really excited to see my cousins that are coming to visit from Colombia in May,” said Santiago Panesso, senior.

Everyone is excited to get outside and be able to enjoy the much-anticipated warmth.

Students at RFK each have plans to go places and do all sorts of different things.

“I’m really ready for the warm weather. I’m mainly excited about hanging out with all of my friends,” said Sebastian Restrepo, senior.

So it seems like all seniors are talking about nowadays is colleges, but not just only about colleges. But their acceptance letters and emails from colleges is what keeps them so excited and out of their seat.

Just a few months ago, almost all of the seniors were under pressure from applying colleges and finding the right school for them to go to. Was it going to be too expensive or should it be a private college?

There were millions of questions flowing through everyone’s mind about college. Now it is like all of the hard work and hassle was worth it in the end. Many seniors don’t know if they should go away for school or stay in New York.

Others are talking about costs for colleges and how they can still be able to contact their friends and visit them once in awhile. The air is just filled with joy and excitement.

“I got accepted to BBCM, York College and Queens Community College and I am still waiting for more responses but I’m glad I got accepted somewhere” said Matthew Madera, senior.

Many students feel like their new life will begin after graduating from high school and starting the college life. It’s like a fresh new start or a new chapter in their life.

They can change how they act, dress, and behave and evolve into a whole new different person. Some other people may feel like they will become more mature in the future and learn much more in college that will be useful to them in life.

“I got accepted to Mercy College but I got rejected in the other college I wanted to go to but I saw that coming since it’s a competitive school to get to anyways but I can’t wait to start college in a few months.” said Ashlee Alexander, senior.

Many students will have a happy face on going around being happy that they got accepted to a college. High school is soon to be over and sooner or later, college will be in our face throwing us new obstacles and tasks for us to challenge.

Students would leave RFK here proud of what they have learned, experienced, and the strong friendships they’ve made and have much more as they move forward in life. College is ready for all us and we’re heading to them soon.

CAPTAIN'S COLUMN By Trevor Stark

The boys traveled to east Harlem last week to play in their 2nd round game against East Harlem Pride. When the buzzer sounded they had fallen and their season was over.

Tears filled the locker room as the seniors new this was there last game ever at RFK. Coach Mulstay was proud of us and how we battled our way back into the game and almost came out with the victory.

He said that we have nothing to be ashamed of and this season was one for the record books. After I was finished crying and hugging everybody I realize that this was a great season.

I got to play out my senior year with no one getting hurt or failing off. I would never trade winning for the bonds I made here at RFK.

That might sound foolish but the times I had with my teammates will be in my memories forever. I remember being a freshman and being so nervous about making the team and what if they don’t like me and things like that.

Even though we never won a banner this team will be remembered always.
I want to say a few words to the players that will be playing next year.

Work hard, listen to Mulstay, and never say never.These three words can make or break your season.

I might not know much but Mulstay does and I’ve been through it for four years and he knows what he is talking about.

For the seniors next year set good examples for the younger players. Young players work hard and you will get your time to shine I promise.

One last thing, always do your schoolwork and focus on that first.

OPINION: RESPONSE TO FRIED--FOREVER CHANGED By Jackie Fundus

The assembly almost all of RFK got to witness was extremely touching and heart wrenching. It was difficult to keep your eyes dry.

Scott Fried came into school today for about three hours to discuss his life journey with HIV. He was infected at 24 years old and now dedicates his time and knowledge to high school and college students.

He lectured us on how to accept yourself and love you for you. “I’m enough” was the true message. Fried even handed out bracelets with his signature motto.

He also explained his journey with HIV with such detail. It almost felt as if I was there when he was in the car with his mom and told her about his illness. Although there was a room full of people, it also felt as if he were speaking to each individual person.

The audience was completely drawn into his stage presence. He spoke the truth and was so lively. His attitude was as bright as his orange and yellow hand painted jeans.

The entire presentation caught my attention. Many students, including myself, enjoyed it so much we had to go back for more. Watching for a second time still brought just as many tears to my eyes as the first time did.

I learned that it’s okay to be you. I am enough just the way I am.

I learned that names hurt.

I learned that you really only get one shot when it comes to certain situations. And that next time, there may be no next time.

Scott Fried truly touched me and forever changed my outlook on life.

SCOTT FRIED ROCKS RFK WITH HEALTH EDUCATION By Karen Barrera & Abigail Champness

Captivating, admirable, and unforgettable—these are the words that describe RFK’s latest guest speaker.

Students and teachers scurried down to the cafetorium, on March 10, in hopes to hear Fried’s entrancing words.

Scott Fried, 47, is one of the many Americans infected with HIV but one of the very few who have taken steps to try and educate others about his disease. He has turned this “curse” into a blessing and has devoted 18 years of his life to lecture teens about safe sex and the value of themselves.

“Get to know the sound of safe sex,” proclaimed Fried at RFK’s assembly.

His story began on November 30, 1987 where he knowingly engaged in unprotected sex with another male, and at that point Fried had both the junior and senior class nothing less than intrigued. He followed it up by talking to the freshman class period 4, then sophomore class period 5, and breakout sessions in the lounge periods 7 and 8.

"Scott Fried was so moving during his tale of HIV," said Michele Gersher. " It was just so powerful and I was deeply moved by him and give him nothing but respect for how far he has come."

It was a moving tale indeed, about the pain of bullying that continued all throughout high school for him, being confused about his sexuality, and the emotions he couldn't help but feel once he discovered he was HIV positive. Scott Fried opened up about that November night in 1987 at 7:30 pm, and how it was his only unprotected sexual experience, and six months later in July his world was shaken by the devastating news that he was positive for the Human Immune Virus.

Being diagnosed with HIV at the young age of 24, Scott Fried discovered that the reason for his infection was because of the hurtful words kept in his pocket. His desire to feel loved and to touch the “hot plate,” as he explained, led him into the world of HIV.

“Scott Fried was amazing. His story was very inspiring and made me think about the way I treat others and myself,” said Damoon Masouleh, junior. “His story moved me in ways I never thought I could be moved.”

Luckily, he turned this negative into a positive and allowed other teens to glance into his world. He has spoken at over 750 institutions, including colleges, high schools, and middle schools.

His message to RFK students was to understand that they’re enough to be who they want to be and make the decisions that they want to make.

By the end of Fried's story, many students in RFK were in tears, sobbing their emotions away, as they felt the sincerity and emotion in Scott's vibrant voice. It was nothing less than a day that brought both students and faculty together, and helped them connect to each other in unthinkable ways.

“You don’t have to do anything to deserve love,” said Fried.

IS TEXTING OUTWEIGHING OTHER COMMUNICATION? By Madina Nayl

When you are bored and want to talk to a friend, you grab your phone and send a quick hello message. When you are running late for lunch with your aunt, you send a “sorry, running late. I will be there in 5” text. These quick routes of communication have impacted modern society, especially the younger generation.

“I would much rather have texting conversations than talk over the phone. It is just quicker and I can do other things during texting because I don’t reply to a message right away. Talking on the phone is just not my number one choice for communication,” said Nooria Nasimi, senior.

The fact that teens can multi-task while they are texting makes it so much more popular and widely used.

“Texting just seems easier in general because you do not need to be in a quiet place, you can text anywhere as opposed to talking on the phone where you cannot have a lot of noise. You can’t talk on the phone at a family dinner without getting up for a minute but you can text your friend what you are thinking without leaving your spot,” said Zaheda Nasimi, senior.

Texting is able to be used virtually anywhere, making it so easy and trendy. However, texting has its consequences just as any other form of communication used while driving. Texting while driving has been the cause of many accidents.

Even celebrities are aware of this issue.

“Texting or using your cell in Florida is NOT illegal...just FYI! I think it should be, I had a scare myself and never will again,” said Kim Kardashian on twitter.

In some cases, such as driving, old fashioned face to face conversations might be the most beneficial way.

Nevertheless, texting does have its benefits.

Spring is just around the corner, and this is that time when those heavy winter jackets come off, and lighter clothing is more visible.

March 20th will mark Spring’s debut, but we have already gotten some taste of spring in the past couple of weeks, when the weather peaked into the upper 60's, but that was only for a brief couple of days.

We have had a pretty rough winter and have witnessed multiple heavy blizzards, and for most of the winter it was hard to get to and fro with all of that snow, which seemed to be glued to the ground.

Aside from the snow, ice was a major problem that had a lot of people walking ever so carefully.

"It was a really bad winter," said Michele Gersher. "It was so tough; it took me thirty minutes to walk to school sometimes, and I only live 10 minutes away."

Hopefully, we will begin to witness more kind weather, so the parks will be filled up again, and more people will be willing to take strolls outside again.

Soon, fashions will change as well, and we will be seeing more short sleeve shirts, skirts and shorts to go along with that.

"I have been waiting for spring for so long, an now it’s right around the corner," said Karen Barrera. "Now I can finally pull out my spring clothes and put away my bulky items.”

There is peer pressure to take drugs, have sex, fight, and even cut school.

They are many television shows that’s deal with the reality of peer pressure and the life style surrounding it.

Shows like Canadian hit show "Degrassi" and the new MTV most "Skins”. These shows are extremely popular among he teenager age group.

Degrassi is a typical drama series that is based around teens dealing with self esteem issues, peer pressure, child abuse, etc.

The new series, Skins seems to be more a more uncensored version of Degrassi. The show travels through the lives of nine adolescents. In the show Tony pressures Stanely to have sex, and use drugs.

The raising question is these shows helping or hurting teens? Some people argue both sides.

"Shows like these both help and influence teens because they shows teenagers how to deal with certain situations of they are every placed in them and it can influence them to want to try certain activities from the shows because it might look cool" said Annie Huang, senior.

Certain adults feel that these shows shouldn't be shown on channels that kids and teenagers have access to.

“My mom doesn’t agree with me watching shows like these because some of the topics use seem too inappropriate for teenagers” said Melissa Wild, junior.

Facebook is the easiest and most popular way to communicate nowadays, but is it a distraction to schoolwork? The easy Internet access makes logging on facebook a routine thing.

A lot of students in RFK go on facebook to talk to friends or share information. Although, many students agreed that facebook does affect their homework time.

“Facebook is somewhat distracting. When I’m doing homework and I get bored I get the urge to check facebook,”said Caroline Popow, senior.

Many other students agreed that they stop working on homework to check notifications on facebook.

“I’ll be working on my homework and the first break that I get, I go on facebook. After being on facebook for a bit, I realize so much time has passed and I still have a bunch of work left. It’s definitely a huge distraction when I have homework and projects. Especially when they are on the computer,” said Sharlyn Rodriguez, senior.

Students find that when they are doing homework on the computer they usually are tempted to log on facebook. A quick check for notifications can turn into an hour-long conversation.

“Whenever I have homework such as an essay to complete on the computer, I make sure not to log on facebook. I make sure I complete all of my homework before checking facebook so that I won’t procrastinate. The easiest way to keep myself from logging in is to think of the consequences after being on facebook. It usually helps, but I’ve sipped a couple times,” said Zaheda Nasimi, junior.

After all, facebook is an element in a student’s life. Although, it shouldn’t take up important time for things such as homework.

It is finally here and RFK is ready for the week long winter break. When we go to school we are so preoccupied about school work and getting the best grades. We have no time for friends, family, fun things, or even sleep.

It is a shock to everyone that the New Year is around the corner. Yet we can’t wait to spend all that free time with our friends and family. We are all excited to have a week off whether you’re going away on vacation or just spending time at home.

“I don’t like school so I’m glad there’s a break coming and I’m probably going to spend it in Long Island and New Jersey,” said Ivana Cardenas, senior.

Once we are out of school, we sometimes don’t know what to do with ourselves. We are so busy going to school and doing school related stuff that when we don’t have them, we don’t know what to do for fun.

We like the time where we spend time with the people we love and open the gifts we have been waiting for all year. Finally the New Year is coming and having fun is what it is all about.

“I’ve been waiting weeks for the holiday session. I can’t wait to see my family even though I saw them last month at Thanksgiving,” said Quincy Outerbridge, senior.

We sit around the Christmas tree and share the laughs with our family and friends. We take a lot pictures to keep the memories forever and catch up on the people who are closet to us.

“I’m planning on celebrating at my sister’s house with my family and my new nephew. Also my brother-in-law’s family and having a great time with them,” said Brett Weisman, senior.

We also have time to do the things and hobbies we love. Now we have the time to play video games and play our favorite sports. We’ve worked hard the couple of months of school and definitely deserve a week of fun!

It is sometimes easy to let the break go by without achieving the fun things you planned. Make sure you don’t let those free days go by without having fun.

As much as we all school work and taking exams, we will all be glad when we go back in January and have a fresh start.

WHERE WERE MY PARENTS? By NIJA WOODS

Many children around the world grow up with many of their love ones out of their lives. People always wonder why a child is so disobedient and out of control growing up. These kids are instantly labeled as bad children. It’s not the children that are bad; it’s the bad things that go on in their lives that make them the way they are. Some children are grateful to have another male or female figure replace that loved one that’s missing but others aren’t as grateful and grow up parentless.

I was a victim of a child growing up in a single parent home.

Many of the people I know were motherless, fatherless, or parentless. They grow up not knowing which direction to turn in life. Many people grow up having children at young ages, getting involved in abusive relationships, having sex at young ages, getting involved with gangs and befriending the streets.

If we only knew how different this all could be, if we just had the proper guidance and support that parents should provide. Many parents are repeating the cycle that they were in as a child. They didn’t have a good childhood and were probably mistreated in their childhood and didn’t learn the proper parenting skills.

“I never thought to give up, I just had to forgive and forget…. I always wanted to be that child who had both their mother and father and a band full of siblings, mostly brothers. It turned out I had neither… My father walked out of my life leaving my mother to struggle and provide for six girls,” said Nadya Stevens, a senior. “My mother wasn’t a parent I would describe as terrible, but needless to say all I had was my grandmother. She was my motivation, inspiration, and my good eye, as I would call her. She was everything I never had. Her death was a stab in the heart and all I had left were my close friends.”

There are great deals of students who walk in the same shoes as Nadya Stevens. They find motivation from what they want to accomplish and by being go-getters, it separates them from others without parents.

“I grew up with all of my family and was actually really close to them. It was just that one person who I always wanted to be there, wasn’t there—my mother. My grandmother and grandfather were more of my parents growing up. They shielded me from all the things that I could’ve gotten into while trying to find the right direction. Thanks to them, I was glad to not have taken that wrong turn,” said Shaina Yasin, a senior.

As children grow up, they look back at their past and that usually determines the turn out of their future. A child only does what they are raised to do and without anyone there to raise them, they will then do what they are influenced to do.

If there’s no one there for them to communicate with, once they go forward there’s no turning back.

Fortunately for the students at RFK, supportive teachers and counselor like Ms. Stamberg are always there for that guidance which keeps kids moving forward.

Can we talk about talent, WOW! Friday night was definitely live and amazing. All the performers did a great job and had their own unique talent.

Going to this year’s talent show was really different from all the other talent shows I’ve been to in this school. It was much more improved and organized.

This is a great thing to me because it’s my last year here and to see the best talent show yet in this year is just great. It was also so funny to the point where I had tears coming down from my eyes from all the laughter.

“I didn’t see the talent show but I heard it was great. I’m actually upset that I missed it but I’ve seen some of the videos and it was so hilarious. If there is another coming next year, I am so not going to miss it!!” said Maria Deaquis, senior.

The impressions of Mr. Morr acted by Alex were just too funny and knocked me off my feet and gasping for air to breathe of how funny it was. Mrs. Hardy doing the dance to that song, Mr. Pernick’s own way of rapping to Jay Z’s song. It was wonderful and I enjoyed it so much.

“Oh my god, to me Kristen and John were my two best performers that I liked so much. They made a crazy great performance. I am very glad that I didn’t miss out on this year’s talent show”, said Ashlee Alexander, senior.

I enjoyed singing along with the girls at the talent show. Some songs were like “Hurt” by Christina Aguilera and “The Only Exception” by Paramore.

At one point I felt like I wanted to tear by hearing the performers sing those songs and singing along it as well. I guess I was touched by the song and their voice!

“Wow, the kid named John Narlis had some serious talent in him. I’ve never seen someone play the guitar so well, fast, and like a maniac. It was a great talent show.”, said a Cardozo student, Daniel Leon.

I have to agree with him as well. I know John Narlis is a quiet student because I have him in my Government class but I felt like when he played that guitar up there, it was like all the words he’s never said came out of him!

I most certainly won’t forget my last year here and watching the best talent show yet performed. I am happy that I got to watch my fellow classmates and students perform and my great friends by my side to watch it all with me.

What are you planning on doing in life after high school…?

As high school slowly comes to an end, we all wonder what we are planning on doing in life.

“I plan on attending college and I am thinking of becoming a PA. I really enjoy working with others and seeing others prosper. This would be the ideal career for me,” said Nooria Nasimi, senior.

Many other students at RFK already know what they want to be doing in life. Whether it involves school, a job, or a career, everyone has something in mind.

“I’m really looking forward to graduating and entering college. I see myself as a dentist down the road. My older brother has his own dentistry practice, which has inspired me to do so. Since I got the chance to see how things work in the dental field, I am exciting about doing so. I am looking into the Sophie Davis DDS program. Although it is very hard to get into, I am setting my mind to it,” said Zaheda Nasimi, junior.

Many students are already looking into colleges as juniors. A lot of juniors are already getting on top of things and visiting different colleges they are interested in. Although not all students are a hundred percent sure of what they want to pursue, they all have interests.

Now after reading this, what do you see yourself doing after high school? Do you want to go to school? Do you want to get a job? There are many different opportunities.

The basketball team is doing great in their first 7 games. Their record is 6 wins and 1 loss. The team only loss was a hard fought game and could have gone either way. A major reason for our success, and the success of any organization, is teamwork.

If you do not have teamwork there is no way that a team can be successful. Everyone on a basketball team has a job. Whether it is scoring the basketball or setting screens everyone is equally important. As a team we have done a great job recognizing this. We have 3 guys scoring over 20 points per game. That’s amazing considering we only play 32 minutes.

The chemistry that you have with your teammates is essential to being a great team. You need to be close on and off the court. If there is a problem between to teammates it is the captain’s job to solve it as soon as possible before the team collapses. This has happened in recent years to the RFK basketball teams. It prevented something special from taking place.

As one of the captains I have to make sure that everyone is getting along fine. If a player has a problem he can come to any captain and talk about it. I cannot stress this enough how important this is to a team.

We have very limited problems and I know it will stay that way for the rest of the season. We have great leaders that know when to be serious and know when to joke around. Our coach knows how to deal with us very well. He knows when to punish us or criticize and he knows when we need to be praised. We earn his respect by playing hard.

We are a family and there is no bond that can break us apart.

Toys for Tots is a program run by the Marine Corps, that strive to get new toys donated to less fortunate children so that they can have a gift on Christmas morning. The RFK Key Club has been extremely successful in collecting toys this year. We had 20 boxes, which is approximately 913 toys.

This was the first year that RFK has been a part of this organization, and we are going to do it again next year.

“We’re going to tweak it for next year, and I think it was an absolutely awesome event that 913 kids are going to have a smile on their face Christmas morning” said Angela Miraglia, parent coordinator.

Not only are you helping other children in need but for every toy you bring in, you get 5 hours community service. Students jumped on the opportunity; it was a quick and easy way to get hours while doing something good for others.

“I am tremendously happy with the results, and I’m hoping to do better next year” says Miraglia, parent coordinator. With all the help and support from the RFK staff and student body, we had made waiting for the holiday season more exiting for others and that in itself is a gift.

“I feel it’s a great organization that helps under privileged kids get the holiday they deserve. I’m glad we raised 913 toys for these kids. I hope that other schools are participating in this program as well,” said senior Darryl Stone.

Every day during lunch periods and hours after school, students in all grades gather to volunteer, play chess, ping pong and tutor each other in the RFK lounge located in room 015.

"The lounge is a great establishment; it brings all grades together,” stated RFK senior Amir Toussi.

The lounge is supervised by the infamous Mr.Cohen. Though Mr. Cohen is in charge of the lounge, Amir feels that he “owns the lounge,” simply because he is always there with open arms to assist Mr. Cohen anyway that he can.

If those requirements make him the “owner,” then the lounge has many owners, especially the leadership class and members of the SGO.

Chioma Eke, the sophomore delegate, is extremely dedicated to the lounge.

“I feel like it’s my job to help Mr. Cohen discuss and plan events for the school. When Cohen needs help I’m down here because it’s my job as a student, a delegate and a leader,” stated Chioma.

Though much hard work is done in this room, there also is time for fun and relaxation. Numerous Ping-Pong challenges take place every day, which is the most anticipated event of the day. Students also display their skills to the student body by singing, dancing and relaxing your mind with guitar playing.

Llesnia Ramirez, an RFK freshmen, comes to the lounge because most of her friends are here when they don’t have class taking a break. Llesnia thinks every school should have a lounge. Llesnia is known by all for constantly taking on a challenge in chess.

“It gives you time to relax in a supervised area with your friends after you worked hard all day,” said Ramirez.

Also, the lounge is the place to go when you want some snacks to enjoy after long day now that the RFK school store has re-opened. Many students are excited about this.

“I’m glad the school store re-opened, it’s exciting. The vending machines are killing us with the timer,” Douhña Perez, an RFK junior stated.

One of the greatest events in Black History during the Civil Rights movement was the arrest of Rosa Parks. During the 1960s, segregation separated Blacks and whites even, on public buses.

Rosa Parks chose to sit in the front of the bus. She refused to give up her seat for a white man. After she was arrested, it became a huge case. Rosa Park’s brave actions made a huge impact on our future.

Today, Blacks, Whites, and every other race can sit where they want on the bus, including the front.

Ironically, Black teens and children still make their way to the back of the bus. Were the actions taken by Rosa Parks done in vain? Let’s find out...

Marquise Greer: “I sit in the back of the bus because it is more comfortable, and it is less crowded. I like the back window.”

Nadya Stevens: “ If you sit in the back on the bus you have a view of everything. Everything is in front of you. I don’t think it has anything to do with race. All high school students do it. It’s more comfortable.”

Nija Woods: “I sit in the back of the bus because I don’t like to give up my seat for other people unless I have to. If I sit on the back of the bus, I am less likely to have to get up for a senior citizen or disabled person. My race has nothing to do with the reason I go to the back of the bus.”

Infinity Bowers: “I sit in the back of the bus because I don’t have to move. The back of the bus is always live, and all the sexy boys sit back there.”

Shaina Yasin: “I sit in the back of the bus because it is less crowded and there is easy access to the door.”

Quincy Outerbridge: “I think we sit in the back of the bus because psychologically, we feel that we belong there. Psychologically, we are segregating ourselves without really knowing it because the back of the bus is just a place for anybody, there is no longer a ‘black’ label but we’re still drawn to it.”

Be proud of who you are.

People are sometimes confused about who they really are. Everybody knows as life goes on, you tend to experiment with things that are unfamiliar to you. Sometimes its starts at an early age or you’ll find out more about yourself when you’re in your teen or college years.

Although, if you are willing to find out who you really are, things like depression and possibly bullying would occur. Your life would feel like it’s over, but don’t let that get you down, as you shouldn’t care what others thing about the way you think you are.

If stuff like this gets to you, talk to someone who you know you could trust and feel comfortable talking too. Don’t keep things bottled up,it ends up hurting you in the long run. Pushing others away doesn’t help either, as you might need a shoulder to lean on for comfort.

If you’re confident in yourself already, then you still face the problem of your parents knowing. It may be hard to tell them, like pressure is building up in you, but once it’s done, you’ll feel relieved of saying it. Although, since people are always different, you won’t know how they’ll react to the situation.

Even coming out is hard, due to the fact that once people know, it makes you an easy target to be harassed and other horrible things. It is like people are afraid of certain things that change. They need to learn to get adjusted to those changes so nothing tragic can end up occurring.

If you want to be who you truly are, then go for it. Just make sure that you’re always safe from any type of harm from being yourself. What you’re trying to accomplish, is to make yourself happy and living the best possible life you can have, because you only get one.

It has been brought to the attention of this year’s senior class that community service hours are needed.

More than half of the seniors this year have fewer than 100 hours of community service hours completed, according to Ms. Adams.

“It’s scary. The lack of concern amongst the seniors is really alarming to me, their guidance councilors, and Mr. Pernick.” says Ms. Adams.

As all RFK students know, you need 200 hours of completed community service in order to graduate. With such low numbers of completed hours, many are in danger of not graduating this June.

Though the students have their work cut out for them, there are some events happening during the school year that should help ease the process of successfully completing the hours needed.

There recently was Peace Day in which gave students who attended gained hours of community service.

There was also a Breast Cancer Walk on October 17th and a diabetes walk on October 24th. The walks were excellent for gaining community service hours. Each walk grants a student 10 hours of community service.

The blood drive is also another great way to receive community service hours. Students receive five hours for donating and five for getting family and friends from outside of the school to come in and donate.

Another great opportunity for students to receive hours is the garden clean up. To sign up for the garden clean up, students can speak with Mr. A or Mr. Zawacki. This will give students additional hours for helping clean the school’s back yard area.

Students should also not forget the prep rallies. There was a bowling prep rally held in which had a great turn out. Students are advised to come to more future prep rallies to receive 2 hours of community service.

The coat drive is also coming up donate one coat and receive one hour of community service.

So for all you seniors out there stressing over community service hours, get involved in some of these events going on at RFK and get those hours done!

Call of Duty Black Ops: Shooter of the year, or biggest disappointment? By Eddy Garcia

Ever since Modern Warfare 2, people became skeptical about how the next one would turn out. But ever since they saw multiplayer footage of Black Ops, pre-order sales for the game have sky rocketed.

Everyone believes that this will be the best, but that’s the same thing they thought with MW2. MW2 had the most amounts of bugs and issues than all other Call of Duty’s, and these issues never got resolved. Players thought that the developers/publishers were just in it for the money, and then left us in the dark.

“To me, they already killed Call of Duty. I don’t see myself getting excited about Black Ops anytime soon,” said Andrew John, senior.

Call of Duty has grown far away from what it used to be. A basic shooting game that let you put attachments on guns, had a leveling system, had perks, and challenges that could be completed. Now it seems the developers are focusing more towards the younger community with odd weapons, attachments, and features.

The main reason though people believe this will be the best is because of who is developing the game. Treyarch has been known of making well balanced games such as Call of Duty: World at War. They also take a lot of feedback from the players and put it into the game such as maps and game modes.

As of now, it’s too early to tell if the game will truly be what the developers said it would be, or be a huge disappointment like MW2. Find out November 9th.

Obesity is a health issue RFK students are facing today, and the solutions are exercise, health and nutrition.

Nutrition is very important in order to live healthy and strong. The major parts of nutrition are water, proteins, fibers, fats, vitamins and minerals. If one doesn’t eat meals with the proper amount of nutrition, you could become sick. To help prevent getting sick it is important to eat well balanced meals three times a day and get the right amount of nutrition.

“If I don’t eat three meals a day, I can’t function properly during the day. I make sure to eat three meals a day with snacks in between so I feel refreshed,” said Marianna Dilluvio, senior.

Drinking a lot of water is also essential during the day. We need to drink six to eight glasses of water a day for proper body nutrition.

“When I play sports, I sweat so I need to drink water to hydrate myself,” said Trevor Stark, senior.

It is important for every school to have a water fountain or for every kid to have a water bottle to drink during the day. Especially if you’re on one of sports teams you can dehydrate if you don’t drink enough water.

“I refuse to drink tap water, so to stay hydrated I bring a water bottle to school every day,” said Jackie Fundus, senior.

Proteins are also important because they help develop and repair bones and muscles and protect us from diseases. We can get proteins from meat, grains and nuts. If you are a vegetarian or don’t eat enough meat, then you need to eat more grains and nuts to get enough proteins.

The body gets its energy from carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are found in most fruits, vegetables, grains, and cereals. This moves through the digestive system helping with digestion of food. It is important to make sure you have enough fiber by eating green leaves, fruits and vegetables.

Taking care of your health is very important to live a long and healthy life.

So I bet many people are excited about what’s coming up at the end of this month. Halloween!! To many people, this holiday is their favorite.

It’s the only day where one can dress up to be anything they want, whether it’s something or somebody they want to be when they grow up or look like a role model of theirs. Others love it for the tons of candy that are handed out and trick or treating down houses and blocks.

The majority of the schools in New York City always have a Halloween dance and that’s where many people can agree where the fun is. This is where they go crazy and talk about what they want to be and how super nice they have to look. Sometimes even those schools get to vote that looks the best or has the best costume.

Although Halloween dances can be fun and exciting, everyone also has to be aware of the dangers outside or inside.

People should be checked if they’ve brought anything dangerous to a party; safety of the students is a big key to every school out there.

There also has been a school that has done this or has canceled or postponed dances due to violence.

People usually stay out late that night and they never know what can happen to them. But besides being cautious of where you are, it is a night to have a blast!

Halloween is going to be another great, fun night this year--just be safe.

Senior year can be really tough and annoying for seniors, especially when seniors get lazy and all they care about is graduating and leaving high school.

Being in the class of 2010-2011 or even other senior classes can be very expensive.

Fees and dues for everything from college applications to senior trip can be hard on a senior and his or her family.

Most seniors are late with their payments and some do not even care about paying it. However, others think it makes sense to pay the dues because things cost money.

“I think seniors should hurry up and pay their dues because it brings you closer to our senior activities,” said Marianna Dilluvio, senior class president.

Along with senior activities come with college expenses and stress about college. The application process can be stressful because if you have to look into colleges and apply as soon as possible.

Some uninformed seniors would think that applying for college is free but it’s not. To send your applications to your chosen college, you have to pay a fee ranging from $30-$60, depending on the college.

Money definitely plays a role in seniors’ lives and how they view their senior year. So, seniors, save your allowance, get a job, and resist the temptation of buying the unnecessary.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS of an RFK TRANSFER STUDENT By MADINA NAYL

Entering a new high school for the first time is a difficult change for many students such as in coming freshmen, and in my own case, transfer students. The first day can bring on mixed emotions including curiosity, nervousness and even fright.

Nevertheless, one thought that all new students share is “what can I expect?”

Walking into RFK Community High School as a senior, I felt as if I was a freshman all over again. The moment of fright really hit me when I realized I knew no one there. Trailing the crowded yet small hallways, I saw many faces and wondered who these people were and whom I would meet and possibly become my friends.

Freshman, Kevin Jiang, I understood his view on RFK in comparison to mine. Kevin felt that RFK was a huge change in comparison to his middle school and it was a hard adjustment.

“ I didn’t really like it because I didn’t know anyone,” Jiang said timidly.

I could really understand where he was coming from because I felt the same way my first day. It was a significant difference between my old school Dougherty Valley High School, brand new, a campus the size of a college campus able to fit up to 3000 students. In his case, Kevin felt the small size of the school was an advantage.

“Yes it is small, but I like it because I won’t get lost,” said Jiang.

Although he was nervous about his first day, he has already grown to like his classes and teachers over the week.

“Mr. Zawacki is a funny, nice and helpful person, so I really enjoy his class,” stated Jiang.

Throughout the past week at RFK I have really started to get in tune with the people, classes, teachers and atmosphere of the high school. Although it is a huge change to go from a high school with two gymnasiums, tennis courts, a football field, track, baseball field, two cafeterias and a theatre able to seat a thousand students to a small one building school, it is a rather welcoming environment here at RFK High.

A huge plus here at RFK would definitely be the schedules because it is set up as a college schedule where some can leave and come earlier or later. Any high school student would like being able to work around their schedule and have less or more classes depending on what they needed.

A drawback here at RFK would be the lack of a football team and cheerleaders because that is an essential sport at any high school. Also, the fact that there aren’t any pep rallies for the seniors is a set back because rallies increase the school spirit at any school.

However, even though RFK is a huge change for Jiang, any other new student here and me, the fact that the school is established and has its own culture and diversity leaves me “expecting” a promising year.

It’s nothing serious just curious! The children’s wrists are turning red, blue, purple, yellow and even more colors. Wacky bands, crazy bands and animal bands—formally known as Sillybandz are the new trend. The thin bracelets are spreading like wildfire, seemingly hopping from arm to arm.

“ The silly bands are innocent, I recently started wearing them because the kids that I tutor were showing off to each other their collection of animals , weird shapes and objects,” said Nabila Akbar, a senior.

Shaped like animals, symbols, musical instruments or sports, the stretchy, bright-colored wristbands have become all the latest rage, popular with people of all ages and the afflict of teachers who just want to finish out the school year. Studies and market surveys have confirmed that since its first release, school going kids, to collegians are enthralled by this product and are making huge profit for them.

“I was surprised to see Ms. Byheny wearing it because I thought this was something only worn by students and especially little children,” said Abida Salimi, a senior.

The two things that make rubber band bracelets so popular for these events lays in the fact that they are inexpensive, making them affordable for just about everyone; and also in the fact that they are age- and gender-neutral.

“I think they are really cute, when I get bored I looked at the shapes I have on my wrist. My favorite one are the dinosaurs, I currently have 10 bracelets on my arm, but I am not planning to get more,” Olivia Brooks, a senior

Was Modern Warfare 2 a disappointment? Many found that game to be so and the franchise is now doomed to failure. However, the revelation of Call of duty Blacks Ops made by Treyarch instead of Infinityward, has some reconsidering the future of Call of Duty. Towards the beginning of May, a video was released showcasing a small portion of Black ops to the world and such it produce many reactions.

“I loved the Trailer. I think it’s going to be a great game,” said Nick Patino, a senior.

At first many were skeptical about the announcement of a new game with the rise and fall of Modern Warfare 2. However, ratings for the video online began to improve after hearing more of the story of what has been happening between Activision and Call of duty developers at Infinityward.

Stories of stolen ideas and bad reputations are revolving around the legal battle between Infinityward and Activision. Most blame Infinityward for creating an imperfect game.

Though now, those who enjoyed games such as Call of Duty World at War have had their gaming spirits revitalized with the News of Call of Duty Black ops and the return of a very popular mode called Nazi zombies, which may get a name change to fit the chronological time line of Vietnam.

Out of all the marking periods, the third one is worth the most. This could work with some students who start weak and end strong. As for those students who start off academically strong and end weak, this could not work well for them. The pressure is on for those students to keep up their game. The third marking period is worth forty five percent of a students overall grade.

“I don’t really like the fact that the grading policy is set this way. This would hurt many students who get lazy towards the end of the school year,” said Senior Nic Patino.

Most students are confident that they are keeping up their game with their grades. For some, it’s a piece of cake to get their work in.

“I think that for this marking period I am getting all my work in. I think I’ll actually do better this marking period. Hopefully this will bring my overall grade up,” said senior Mercedes Rivas.

This is not the same case for many other students. Some feel like they are falling behind on their school work. For many of the RFK seniors, they are lacking that final push to end the school year.

“Even though I’m supposed to be working my hardest to get all my work in and get a good grade, I’m getting lazier,” said senior Javid Yousef.

“I am definitely getting lazier because it is the end of school and you don’t want to do work,” said senior Daniel Medina.

This trend is not a new one. A majority of students have always felt this way towards school work as the year ends.

Fashion is not only a school related topic, but it’s an international topic. Every country has its own type if fashion. Tyra Banks is one of the most famous, though a retired model, she helps girl’s dreams come true. Tyra hosts her show the Tyra Banks show as well as America's Next Top Model. Where13 or 14 lucky girls are selected from millions of girls that joins others from all over the country, in a competition to become America's Next Top Model.

America’s Next Top Model cycle 14 has just finished. Millions of people watched the final episode in hopes that their favorite girl wins, and becomes America’s next top model. The show not only had a new judge, André Leon Talley, but thirteen new girls also joined to compete in hopes of becoming the winner at the end.

The two finalists are Raina and Krista. Raina needs more versatility; Krista needs to prove she can work her face like she can work her body. Who will win the desirable prize?

After weeks of competing and having their ups and downs, it all comes down to who did best through out the competition. “Being a model seems harder than I thought it would be,” says senior Karen Escobar.

The final episode came down to a cover girl shoot and commercial. Cycle 13 winner came and helped the girls out, and also joined them on the Anna Sui runway show. The fashion show had a circus theme for the models to abide by.

“I loved that the fashion show theme was circus, it kept me entertained,” said a junior at Brentwood High School, Rebecca Cancel. Tyra talked to the girls before the final elimination. The winner was announced, Krista was announced cycle 14 ANTM.

When Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), a young American, travels to Verona, Italy. The romantic city where Romeo first met Juliet, she meets a group of volunteers who respond to letters written to “Juliet” seeking romantic advice.

Sophie finds and answers a letter that has been lost for 50 years.

Sophie is stunned when its author Claire (Vanessa Redgrave) arrives in Italy with her handsome but overprotective grandson (Christopher Egan) to find the fiancé she left decades before.

Fascinated by Claire's quest, Sophie joins them on an adventure through the beautiful hills of Tuscany searching for Claire's long lost Lorenzo. The journey will change their lives forever, as they discover it's never too late to find true love.

This movie shows how in one trip a person could change their own mind and two people’s destiny will be changed.

“I saw the trailer and it caught my attention. First of all the song that was picked, “love story” is great. I like the part where the old man is on the horse.” said Marina Vazura, a senior.

But romantic movies (love stories) might not be the like of everyone, some might think it is boring or they have already seen it. People prefer action movies, comedy movies and scary movies.

Some plots in love stories might be too cheesy, so “Letters to Juliet” might not be a good choice.

“I’m not into love stories. “Letters to Juliet” does not interest me, I prefer using my money for a better movie” said Hawa Faiq, a sophomore.

With summer approaching and nice weather on the rise its time for girls to hit the mall. A new season brings new fashion and there’s no time like the present to get a start on your summer shopping. Summer fashion mostly consists of bright colors. Yellow, pink, white are perfect colors for the summer. On those really scorching summer days, a summer dress defintely comes in hand.

“I love wearing dresses in the summer,” senior Tyesha Sistruck said. “It makes you feel so much cooler on hot days”.

Some people think that tight is better. Tight shirt, tight jeans but loose blouses are definitely in this season. Loose is always better it gives you room to breath and it’s both classy and trendy at the same time.

“I love the long shirts they look really cute with a pair of leggings,” said senior Karen Gutierrez.

The perfect summer outfit can’t be complete without a nice pair of sandals. This season it’s all about gladiator sandals. With straps and buckles the sandals make a simple outfit look better. You’re not complete without a pair of sunglasses. There are so many styles to choose from. Big glasses, round glasses, color glasses, whichever looks best on your face.

With all the new summer fashion girls can stay trendy and cool at the same time.

The Gorillaz album Plastic Beach is the third studio album from the band, released March 3, 2010. The album has three singles; “Stylo,” “Superfast Jellyfish,” and “On Melancholy Hill.” The album appeals to people who like to listen to hip hop and alternative rock. The lyrics send a message about consumerism. The lyrics also talk about ecology.

The album features some noticeable people such as Snoop Dog, Lou Reed, and Paul Simon. Big fans of the Gorillaz will be happy to watch the music videos, including all the animated characters such as 2D, Murdoc, Noodle, and Russel.

The idea for the album was created when Damon Albarn the lead vocalist and songwriter was walking along the beach finding plastic in the sand. Before the album was released, short videos were released showing how certain members of the animated band arrived at the plastic beach.

The song “Stylo” has been remixed multiple times to appeal to multiple types of people. Listeners should start by sampling the original version before hearing how the song has been remixed.

The song “Melancholy Hill” has a bright mood to it. The song is more of a pop song than an alternative rock song, but it suits the album nicely. The song was made to be lighter than the other songs and give a positive feeling to the listener.

However, the song “Superfast Jellyfish” is the only rap song on the album. It takes away from the album as a whole scince it is the only rap song in the album. It is so unlike the rest of the other songs that it takes away from the main message of the album.

The album earns a total of 4 out of 5 stars. This album has a positive message about ecology and consumerism. Some of the songs are good and live up to the band’s original work. However, some of the other songs are not as good as the old Gorillaz albums. The old albums, such as Demon Days, had more originality and a better sound than this album. Plastic Beach is a bit too different from their old work and it is hard to get used to the new ideas of their songs though the tune is similar to their old work.

The album is good but, more could have been done to improve the songs. The music is good and many songs have been remixed on a positive note. Unfortunately, you will not find all of those remixes on the album. You will have to go a bit out of your way to find the other remixes, but, it is worth the effort to find them.

High school is a milestone in every person’s life, whether it was a great or traumatizing experience. You would expect by teenage years people would grow up and stop being insecure and immature right?

Wrong.

Bullying seems something so completely and utterly elementary that everyone’s assumes that it stayed there. Well we all know the saying about people who assume. As surprising as it may appear to be, people still fall victim to this terror even as they grow older.

“Although we do not see the typical “give me your lunch money” type of bullying in RFK, I think bullying is inhumane.” said Dionis Ahmetaj. “If a child is having problems at home or is feeling insecure, they should not resort to bullying but instead they should try to seek help from an adult.”

There are numerous kinds of bullying that engulfs “helpless” kids.

There is that kind that unknowingly causes pain and emotional distress for a person. It’s quite often that a group of friends may poke fun at one another and laugh at the expense of each other’s mistakes, but after a while it tends to get old. This act quickly morphs into the source of pain for one and the source of amusement for another. They victimize a person and take the joke too far.

“The unnecessary drama people fight over is quite ridiculous,” said Heather Mendez. “People attack those who don’t have any kind of defense mechanism, I don’t get how that shows them to be strong or mighty, if anything it shows how weak and self conscious they are. ”

Another kind is that which a person physically abuses someone and goes out of their way to make somebody uncomfortable.

“Violence is never the answer to any problem.” said Abigail Champness. “It is a coward’s outlet and people do it so that they may feel better about themselves.”

The most ignored type of bullying is the cyber kind.

People brush this act off and state that it is merely just words, however, words may appear to not damage anyone on the surface, but deep down it scars the faint hearted.

On the contrary, sometimes people misconstrue things and manipulate situations and tend to play the victim card when that is not necessarily the case. Sometimes people over exaggerate situations and like to

People may not think at the time about what they are doing, but it really affects people’s self esteems.

When you bully someone it can lead to a person retracting into a shell, becoming antisocial, feeling horrid about themselves, and causing them to have trust issues to some extent.

Although it is a mean thing to do, there are ways one can prevent this act. People may feel like their lives are over and that they have nothing to live for.

A bit dramatic? Yes, yes it is. But that is how some people regard this situation they fall into; in reality all they have to do is speak up and defend themselves. It is not really that hard to do; or better yet find a few people you can rely on no matter what, because if these people are bulling you, they’re not really your friends.

How do you move on from being bullied?

Simple. Find some new friends and learn to protect yourself from verbal or physical abuse.

The last touches were made on the yearbook and the final copy was sent to ezbook. The yearbook was created by the publications class taught by Mrs. Huggins. This was the first year that the yearbook had 96 pages due to the population growth, more pages were needed.

Students that were in the publications class felt very strongly about the effort they put into the year book.

“I feel proud that we’re done. We really pulled it together" said senior Mariam Chardiwall; all of the students were assigned pages to complete with a deadline.

"I'm happy it’s done and it’s the best one till now" said senior Nick Patino. Despite being a great yearbook this yearbook was the biggest till date.

With the amount of pages added there were many more topics and special moments captured and placed in the yearbook. Some students had their opinion of the yearbook being completed.

“I think it was too early and I didn’t hear about it, so I’m a little bit disappointed because I would have liked to hear more about it but I’m sure it’s going to come out to being a good one” senior Paul Evans.

Some students want to be aware of what is to be expected to be in the yearbook but where is the suspense in that. There was some controversy of the yearbook and the matter exceeded outside of school.

“I trust me class mates and hope it came out good” said senior Michael Sanchez.

The publications class put in all of their time to create a wonderful yearbook. It’s good to remember that the yearbook is a time share treasure that will take us back to past, years from now.

It has been forty years since the first Earth Day. This year, on April 22nd, we are finally able to celebrate Earth’s wellbeing. Becoming more eco-friendly has become a very popular part of our culture.

Certain actions such as recycling, buying organic products with no preservatives, reducing C02 emissions, driving a hybrid car or not driving as much are ways that any person can help their environment.

Aside from recycling and trying to reduce waste, many new eco-friendly technologies are being produced. Energy efficient equipment, renewable energy sources and products are being worked on everyday to help make a brighter tomorrow.

RFK students particularly have contributed to “Going Green” by helping to organize the recyclable products and regular waste. The NHS was in charge of distributing lids for recyclable products such as paper, plastic and cans.

Earth Day is not only for individual people. Corporations, social communities and government groups are meant to also support Earth Day. About 190 countries are taking action for Earth Day.

All over the country events are taking place on this day. Green Festivals, community clean-ups, and concerts are a few of the many events that are taking place.

In order to keep these types of programs running and getting the community involved, Earth Day 2010 has created a website which is committed to taking any needed action. The website is www.earthday.org.

As community leaders, RFK student officials and the schools administration are very loyal to the Go Green cause.

“I think it is great that the school now organizes the recyclable products better than before. That’s what this process is about, improving our ways,” said senior Mehak Kaur.

A friend of mine told me about an event being held on their college campus. The entire school was going to participate in a Nerf-gun fight. Everyone is going out to buy guns and go against each other right on the campus.

When I heard this idea, it got me thinking that this would be a cool event to try here at RFK. I asked many people how they felt about it and they seemed to love the idea. “If we did this, I would get the biggest and best Nerf-gun and take the whole school down in battle,” said Alex Hernandez.

At RFK we could maybe even try to hold something like a water balloon or water gun fight. Students agree that it would definitely grab everyone’s attention in the school and most likely get a lot of participants.

“I think this would be a really cool thing to do. I would definitely get all my friends to participate in it if it was held,” said Nic Patino.

“I don’t care if we have to pay, but if anyone wets my hair, it’s on!” said Destiny Thomas.

If enough people in the school bring this idea to the attention of the leadership class, it could possibly be held in the last few weeks of school. We might even be able to make it a way to raise money to better the school.

“In the spirit of summer, it would be a really good event to have and I think everyone would have a lot of fun and will definitely sign up,” said Mariam Chardiwall.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Food gives you energy and in the morning people need energy especially us high school students. There are various different types of food you could eat for breakfast.

“I need to have breakfast in the morning because if I don’t I will be tired all day in school,” said Ashley Penny, senior.

You can choose to eat healthy and eat fruit or whole grain cereal or a nutrition bar or rice cakes.

“I eat raisin brand cereal every morning it’s healthy and tasty,” said Alex Hernandez.

You can also choose something not so healthy. For us students at RFK, we are surrounded by delis where we can order breakfast. We are also close to a McDonalds which everyone loves.

“I love that Mickey D’s is close to the school because I can go every morning before class," said Steven Rios.

McDonalds now offers breakfast on the dollar menu. The dollar menu makes it possible to get a tasty bagel or a MCmuffin for cheap. The MCgriddle is also a very popular breakfast sandwich to get from McDonalds.

“I love the Mcgriddle it’s small but delicious,” said Dwight Thompson.

If you don’t want to eat breakfast from McDonalds you can also buy breakfast from one of the delis near by.

A bacon egg and cheese is a very popular sandwich amongst the students at RFK.

You can have both a healthy and tasty breakfast for a decent price. It's just up to you to decide which one you prefer.

STUDENTS RALLY the BASEBALL TEAM By Nic Patino

On April 21st RFK held a pep rally in support of the Boys Baseball team, The RFK Panthers. Dozens of RFK students and parents came to support the Panthers.

Mr. Cohen and Mrs. Henry coordinated this pep rally for many reasons. They thought that we could support the Panthers while helping our community.

“I believe that it is community service because the community starts with us,” said Mr. Cohen. In reward for coming to the game and wearing RFK school colors, the fans were awarded with 2 community service hours.

This pep rally was held for many reasons. The first and most obvious reason was to support the RFK Boys Baseball Team. The second was to reward the students of RFK for taking time out of their day to come and support their schools team with community service hours.

Ashley Penny, Trevor Stark, Aryelle Mirvil, and Rahmatullah Mayan were the four students that were responsible for the pep rally. Trevor Stark who is the starting left fielder for the Boys Baseball Team thought that it would be a great idea to get more support for the team.

“Not a lot of people show up to the boys baseball games,” said Stark “I thought that this would be a good way to gain some support.”

Ashley thought that we should reward all of the supporters by giving them community service hours.

“It makes sense to reward all of the supporters for taking time out of their day to support our team,” said Penny. “The best possible way that they can be rewarded is with community service hours.”

With pom-poms and signs reading “GO PANTHERS” in hand, over seventy parents and students came to support the Panthers in a very successful pep rally.

“I finally get to hang up my big winter coat and break out the shorts and shorts sleeves,” said senior Destiny Thompson.

After Saturdays crazy rain storm the weather has taken a change for the better.

“It was a shock to come to school after the rainy weekend and find the temperature to be in the 60’s,” said junior Kristopher Tidball.

Most people hate the winter time because they have to wear a million and one clothes just to stay warm.

“When it snows my usual outfit consists of 2 sweaters, jacket, leggings and jeans which are very uncomfortable because it makes me feel bulky all day,” said Hawa Faiq.

Shorts and short sleeves are a summer time favorite because if it’s “free” type of feeling.

“When it’s hot outside I absolutely love to wear clothes that allow my skin to breathe and soak up the Sun,” said senior Destiny Petty

The spring and summer seasons are also renown for being the beach season, where bathing suits and swimming trunks are prominent.

“On a normal summer day shorts and short sleeves are a must, but when its beach time swimming trunks and wife beaters are what I have to wear,” said junior Robert Power

Most people do their summer clothes shopping in the winter time, reason being they get all the good stuff because other people are focused on winter garments.

“A perfect time to purchase shorts and short sleeves is the winter time because there are more items to choose from,” said junior Tevin Richardson
